Steak and Cake – by Elizabeth Karmel
Those three little magical words (most of you are thinking: “I love you!”) Nope, I am talking about Steak and Cake. In this cookbook, Elizabeth Karmel presents delicious steak and cake combinations to make any meal a celebration, where all you have to consider is the side dish (and she’s even got some of those in here too).
I decided to hit the pause button on grilling up the steaks until warmer weather returns but dove head-first into the cake recipes – and I am so glad I did!
Let’s begin by talking about Anthony’s Grandmother’s Earthquake Cake – a BIG name for a cake that is BIG in size and flavor. Just imagine a German chocolate cake swirled with cheesecake. The bottom is a fine layer of coconut and pecans which adds to the flavor (yet can be removed if you don’t care for it.) This 9×13 cake is impressively thick and full of deliciousness. This is a cake for all ages and would be a great thing to bring to share at your next gathering.
Next on the list, I tried the Baked Cinnamon-Sugar Doughnut Puffs, a bite-size desert. Have you ever had warm buttered toast smothered with cinnamon and sugar on top? Well, this is a small mini-cupcake that tastes like a donut finished just like that. The recipe makes 48 of these babies – so enough to share!
Last – but not least – is the Classic Sour Cream Coffee Cake. Who does not yearn for a cake with cinnamon and sugar baked into it. You absolutely cannot go wrong with serving this cake ANY DAY at ANY TIME. It transcends brunch and brings something deliciously sweet to any meal.
When the warm weather returns, we can turn to the steaks. This book is to be continued…
