Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9 inch square dish.
Whisk together cream, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper and nutmeg in a small bowl and set aside. Toss the potatoes, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 pepper in a bowl.
Arrange 1/3 potatoes in buttered dish, overlapping. Sprinkle with 1/3 cheese. Repeat 2 more times (end with cheese). Pour cream over top layer. Gently shake to evenly distribute.
Cover with foil; bake 30 minutes. Remove foil; bake until bubbling and well browned, about 30 minutes more. Let cool slightly before serving.
