Midwest Made-Shauna Sever
There are so many perks to living in the Midwest – the summers where I live in Michigan are truly magical – there is no place else I would rather be. Great lakes and farm fields are two things of beauty in my amazing state and our summer farm markets burst with fresh fruits and vegetables which when purchased locally and fresh add so much flavor to the meals of the season.
Recently, Tim and I hosted a couple for dinner who we met through the friendship of our sons when they were young. The friendship of both parents and boys has stood the test of time. They arrived with a delicious cherry dessert in hand which was inspired by a newly purchased and loved cookbook called “Midwest Made”.
Of course, I had to find a copy to see it for myself. This ode to baked goods from the Midwest is filled with delicious and easy to bake recipes with so many options-you could find something to bake for everyone you know. The descriptive recipes and beautiful photos make this book a treasure.
Although we are currently past the Michigan strawberry season the Roasted Strawberry Long Cake with Yogurt Whipped Cream was calling to both my heart and my stomach. I liked the fact that this version of the typical short cake and berries was baked together in the same pan saving both time and dirty dishes. I was also intrigued that the cake contained yogurt which made it a bit healthier than recipes I have tried in the past. I have to say this strawberry long cake was absolutely delicious and I am excited to share this recipe with you. I encourage you to pick up a copy of “Midwest Made” at your bookstore or local library.
